2009 ADA Clinical Practice Recommendations

Glycemic Control    

Hemoglobin A1C (glycated hemoglobin)   <6.5%
Pre-meal plasma glucose   80 - 120 mg/dl
Post-meal plasma glucos
(1-2hrs after meal)
  <180 mg/dll
Blood Pressure   <130/80 mmHg
Pre-Diabetes Hemoglobin Alc   5.7% - 6.4%
Lipids    

LDL   <100 mg/dl
Triglycerides   < 150 mg/dl
HDL    > 40 mg/dl

  • Hemoglobin A1C is the primary target for glycemic control
  • Goals should be individualized and discussed with your physician

ADA recommended standards for people with Diabetes

 

Alcohol Consumption:
The same precautions apply to someone with Diabetes that would apply to someone without. If an individual chooses to use alcohol or alcohol containing beverages, these should be limited to moderate amounts (less than one drink per day for an adult woman and less than two drinks per day for an adult man). One alcoholic beverage is defined as 12oz beer, 5oz wine, or 1.5oz distilled spirits.
